Although spinel is relatively unknown to the public, it's a shame, as spinel is ideal for use in jewellery and comes in virtually every possible colour, with red being the most common. Red spinel is often confused with ruby; in fact in the English crown jewels there are two large red spinels that were mistaken as rubies for centuries. Like ruby, spinel exhibits fluorescence in natural light and is often found in the same gravel deposits. Spinel is the anniversary gemstone for the twenty second year of marriage, so a piece of spinel jewellery would be perfect for this occasion.
